Byron Bay surfwear brand Salt Gypsy has revealed the result of a production halt in mid-2015.

Founder Danielle Clayton revealed she ceased manufacturing in order to restablish the brand's supply chain.

Today, the brand uses 100% regenerated nylon yarn made from pre and post consumer waste materials.

This includes ghost fishing nets, plastic ocean waste, carpet and textile offcuts.

Clayton said the repurposed nylon has the same characteristics as virgin raw material.

“I've seen first-hand how imperfect, polluting, wasteful and unethical the fashion production and industry status quo can be. We have the power to change the way we produce and consume apparel."

Salt Gypsy is now R-Certified; offsetting the energy consumption of its manufacturing and donating it to energy projects in Northern NSW.

“I simply do not see any other way to operate as a business and as a consumer then to be environmentally and socially responsible and this is the status quo we are aiming and advocating for," Clayton said.

Next month, Salt Gypsy will launch The Navy and Gold Collection, which sees a range of bold colours and prints across surf and activewear.

This includes the Turtleneck Rash shirt in Poppy Red ($109), The Drifter Bottom in Gold ($119), The Squarecut One-piece in Navy Star ($189) and The Iconic Surf Legging in black ($129).

Clayton started the label in 2012 whilst living as a surf instructor in the Maldives, following a longstanding job in sales with Billabong.
