Hugo Boss has taken out a major award for its sustainability achievements.

The APCO Awards took place this week in Melbourne, recognising the sustainable packaging achievements of businesses from more than 13 industries, including fashion.

Hugo Boss took home the Clothing, Footwear and Fashion sector award, beating finalists including Blundstone and Birkenstock.

Hugo Boss has launched a new closed-loop system that sees its coat hangers returned to distribution centres for reuse - or recycled when no longer reusable.

The brand’s shopping bags and gift boxes are FSC certified, and, thanks to the elimination of plastic lamination, now fully recyclable.

The Hon Trevor Evans, Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, joined more than 180 guests to celebrate the achievements of the 18 award-winning organisations, representing a broad range of sectors, including manufacturing, retail, transport, technology, hospitality and pharmaceuticals.

"It was inspiring to hear more about the practical initiatives that Australian businesses are implementing across the country right now to improve their packaging recyclability, to build strong, sustainable supply chains and, critically, to deliver the 2025 National Packaging Targets," Evans said.

"I look forward to working closely with APCO and all of its Members in 2020 to continue to drive such meaningful and important change.”

APCO CEO Brooke Donnelly also praised the win.

“With the 2025 target to make all packaging 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable now in focus, industry collaboration and innovation have never been more important.

"Tonight’s award ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of organisations that are leading the way in making this target a reality.

"We look forward to continuing to work with them in close partnership, in order to share the innovation, learning and insights required to build a circular economy here in Australia."
