PETA Australia has welcomed the news that Uniqlo has banned alpaca wool, following a PETA investigation.

The Japanese retailer, which operates 23 stores across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia, has banned the wool, after a PETA investigation discovered worrying practices at one of the world's largest privately owned alpaca farms in Peru.

PETA Australia spokesperson Emily Rice said that the organisation wants those who care about animals to boycott alpaca wool.

"We welcome Uniqlo's compassionate decision, which will help prevent vulnerable alpacas from being abused and shorn bloody for their wool.

"We're urging people who care about animals to boycott alpaca wool and opt for vegan clothing instead, which no animal has to suffer for," she said.

Uniqlo joins the likes of New Zealand retailer Smith & Caughey's, Marks & Spencer, Maison Numan, Overstock and Esprit who have banned the fibre.

Uniqlo has previously banned mohair after talks with PETA US.
