A Melbourne designer has been accused of offending 1.1 billion people.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has called for the withdrawal of a garment carrying the image of diety Lord Ganesha.

Ganesha appears on a set of high-waisted briefs by fashion label Soulan Zee.

UPDATE: The designer has advised ragtrader.com.au that all items have now been removed from the website. "I had no intention to offend anyone by producing these printed garments and have now stopped production of them, all items are removed from the website."

Zed said the crotch positioning is "highly inappropriate" and alleged the use of Hindu dieties for commercial outcomes offends 1.1 billion worshippers.

He has called for the withdrawal of the garment and a formal apology from the brand and its CEO.

The garment is priced at $40 and pitched at the festivals market.

Created by designer Leyla Raif, it is stocked online and in stores globally.
