Target Australia has launched the payment platform Zip in store and online ahead of Christmas.

The addition of Zip further expands the retailer's payment options which also include AfterPay, currently available for online purchases.

General marketing manager Kenton Elliot said the payment options were to help families prepare and manage their budget ahead of the festive season.

"We're pleased to announce that we've expanded Target's payment methods with the introduction of Zip and AfterPay.

"These payment options are perfect for families purchasing big ticket items for their loved ones this Christmas - we know that our customers like to be prepared and purchase these type of items early so this year we're excited that we can offer customers this kind of convenience."

Last year, Australians were predicted to spend an average of $1,178 on Christmas gifting, food and entertainment and holiday travel.
