Gildan has dressed nearly 1000 Pride members in multi-coloured shirts on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, in celebration of Mardi Gras’ 44th anniversary.

The human progress flag was also, albeit temporarily, created in preparation for the Sydney World Pride Day in 2023.

Gildan Brands Australia GM David Hillen said the brand is committed to supporting Australian communities.

“The Mardi Gras is a tribute to love – all love – and this year's celebrations were bigger and brighter than ever.

"The members of the LGBTQIA+ community coming together in a colourful display highlights Sydney’s local support for World Pride Day in 2023.

"We were privileged that Gildan Brands had the opportunity to play a role in the day’s success.

“Our brand is very passionate about supporting Australian communities, particularly those that provide a safe place for individuals to be their true selves.”

The day commenced with participants lining up to select their choice of coloured Gildan t-shirt, prior to positioning themselves for the photograph.

The event also included speeches that honoured Aboriginal land and Mardi Gras history.

In a statement, Mardis Gras hailed the launch a success ahead of the World Pride event in Sydney 2023.

“It had a high-energy vibe where everyone represented a different colour in the flag.

"With over 1,000 individuals coming together to wear Gildan t-shirts, the movement has sparked excitement and great anticipation for next year’s World Pride 17-day celebration.

“As we know, the LGBTQIA+ community is more than just rainbows and colours, it’s been a tough journey for many, and we wanted to have a responsibility to positively contribute to a greater issue through a thought-provoking and action-inducing way that was fun for everyone.”
