David Jones has furthered its sustainability mission, announcing a recycling program with TerraCycle.

The program will allow customers to drop off hard-to-recycle beauty packaging to dedicated bins in-store, where it will then be collected by TerraCycle for recycling.

The BeautyCycle initiative follows other eco-friendly actions the department store has taken in recent months, including a circular fashion partnership with GlamCorner and the launch of its Mindfully Made hub.

"Our customers have responded well to our Mindfully Made shoppable edit online," David Jones GM of beauty Rachel Duffy-Packer said.

"We can see their values driving their shopping behaviour, and their desire to do more.

"Our partnership with TerraCycle for our BeautyCycle program will ultimately help to break the cycle of waste in the beauty industry as together we strive to contribute to a more environmentally conscious future," she said.

David Jones' partnership with TerraCycle has launched across stores nationally today, Earth Day 2021.

David Jones head of sustainability Eloise Bishop said the program forms part of the retailer's transition to eco-friendly ways of doing business.

"David Jones is committed to reducing our impact on the environment by investing in programs and activities that optimise our use of energy and increase diversion of waste from landfill.

"We are also committed to exploring new ways of doing business to support a transition to the low-carbon and circular economy of the future.

"Our new BeautyCycle initiative is part of this commitment.

"It is designed to help our customers dispose of used beauty products in a convenient way and assist in creating a beauty industry that thinks full circle," she said.

Materials that can be recycled as part of the initiative include soft plastic, rigid plastic and pumps, glass bottles, jars and pots, masks and packaging, along with make-up products including foundation bottles, lipsticks, eyeshadows, compacts, mascaras and more.

Once collected by TerraCycle, the plastics will be sorted, shredded, melted down and turned into plastic pellets that can substitute virgin plastics to make new items.

TerraCycle ANZ GM Jean Bailliard welcomed the partnership with David Jones.

"This collaboration with David Jones is exciting for our organisation and supports its mission to move waste from a linear system to a circular one.

"The BeautyCycle initiative will educate customers on a mass scale and provide a simple solution for a busy consumer.

"Sustainable shopping has to be our future and with the support from a major retailer like David Jones, there is no limit to what we can achieve," he said.
