Australian fashion industry representatives have been given a first-hand look at where their products come from.

Narrabri cotton growers, researchers and ginners hosted an industry tour earlier this week, incorporating a visit to Auscott's Narrabi farm during harvest and gin processing.

The group included representatives from Bonds, Specialty Fashion Group, Pretty Girl Fashion Group, Liberty Prints and designer Gary Bigeni.

Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay said they met with some of Australia's leading cotton scientists.

“It’s hugely powerful for these fashion and textile representatives to get out on farm and taker a deeper look at where the cotton in their products come from.

“Increasingly, the world’s fashion designers, brands and retailers are paying attention to supply chain management and product provenance.

"There’s a strong interest in responsibly produced and ethical natural fibres that have a positive story to tell. Australian cotton fits the bill as a natural fibre of choice.”

He said significant advancements have been made in the field.

“Australia’s cotton scientists and researchers have underpinned the industry’s significant improvements, including a 95% reduction in insecticide use in the last 15 years, and a 42% increase in water use efficiency since 2003.
