Australian luxury retailer Belinda International has added a consignment arm to its business.

The 30-year-old retailer is now offering pre-loved designer pieces from brands including Hermes, Dolce and Gabbana Cartier, Bottega Veneta and Oscar De La Renta.

The service is open to Belinda's global customers, who can send their pieces into the retailer to be authenticated and sold either online or in-store.

From the sale, Belinda International and the sender split the profits fifty-fifty.

Speaking to Ragtrader, Belinda International co-owner Josh Penn said it was important for the business to support its customers to buy pre-loved luxury pieces.

"The younger generation really want to see businesses taking action and do things in a more sustainable way.

"Consignment also gives garments a longer lifespan and also takes a lot of the stigma away from the idea of ‘second-hand’ or ‘used’ clothing.

"It also encourages people to buy better and buy fabrics that are made in a sustainable way, supporting brands that pay attention to that.

"We're pretty lucky in that we have existing clients that have a lot of garments already, that they had just sitting in their wardrobe that they wanted to give to us so launching consignment wasn't so difficult.

"We have a section in the store now with the product, and we shoot it in house and we put it on the website - that's been really effective," he said.

Penn added that the customer response to the service has been positive.

"We weren't expecting that many people to love it and we've had such a significant response, that we really need a lot more products," he said.
