Asos has announced it will ban the sale of cashmere, mohair and silk products on its site and will ensure all its sites are free of those materials by the end of January 2019.

The eCommerce platform counts Australia among its top five international export markets.

The ban will additionally cover products that use feathers, down, bones and shells under the new policy changes.

The company already had policies in place to cover its own-label products but has now extended the ban to all products sold on the site.

Animal rights group PETA praised the move after it released a video expose of mohair practices in South Africa earlier in the year which prompted other retailers such as Topshop, H&M and Forever 21 to ban mohair in their products.

PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman applauded the move stating that consumer demands were changing the face of the fashion industry.

“PETA applauds Asos for leading the charge for compassion in fashion.

“Consumers are changing the face of the industry by demanding that designers and retailers ditch animal-derived materials in favor of cruelty-free alternatives that look great without causing suffering.”
