Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that Victoria will not be emerging from lockdown tomorrow evening as scheduled.

The news comes as the state records 13 new COVID cases from over 250 exposure sites.

Comparing the Delta variant to a fire, the Premier said that while the state has made progress to contain the outbreak, it is still smouldering.

Andrews said that if the restrictions lifted tomorrow, the 'smouldering' variant would again spark up and spread again.

He vehemently expressed that he would not keep the state in lockdown any longer than what it needed to be, but also wouldn't open before the possibility to remain open was available.

Finer details of the lockdown restrictions and the length of extension are yet to be released but are expected to come out tomorrow morning.

The Victorian lockdown was originally set to end tomorrow night at 11.59pm.
