Topshop Australia has weighed in on whether sweeping store closures across the UK will affect local operations.

Arcadia Group, owner of the High Street chain, recently announced it will close up to 260 UK stores as leases came up for renewal.

Arcadia operates Topshop, Topman, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Wallis and Evans.

The group has already closed 65 stores over the past year, with the next round of slashing set to occur over the next few years.

This follows a 38 per cent fall in pre-tax annual profit, diving from $213.2m pounds (A$326.6m) in 2009/10 to $133.1 million (A$203.9m).

Total sales from 2507 owned stores and 600 franchised outlets in 36 countries also fell 3.4 per cent to 2.7 billion pounds (A$4.14b).

However, Australian franchise partner Next Athleisure remains optimistic about the future of Topshop and Topman locally.

The company will launch its first flagship store in Melbourne on December 8, followed by a Sydney site in August.

Next Athleisure chairman Hilton Seskin said he expects both brands to perform well.

"I can not comment on the Arcadia Group's plans but what I can say is that it has and will have no effect on Australia," he confirmed.

"The Topshop and Topman brands are amazing and we are confident of great success in our market. Post Sydney in August we are currently looking at oppurtunities in all major cities."

The company is currently negotiating a number of sites nationally, with the first stage of a domestic rollout wrapping in 2013/14.

Topman managing director David Shepherd is also confident about the brand's future in Australia.

"Based on the confidence and significant growth in online sales in Australia through Topman.com over the last year, we are very excited to now finally secure a permanent Topman store with a franchise partner. We look forward to further expansion over and above the targeted cities of Sydney and Melbourne in due course."
