Melbourne Central has declared its inaugural One Day Shopping Festival a success, attracting the strongest consumer foot fall this year.

The GPT Group-operated shopping centre staged the activation yesterday, with over 180,000 locals making up the traffic count.

Its One Day Shopping Festival included a schedule of activities aimed at driving consumers back into brick-and-mortar retail stores.

Melbourne Central general manager said the event was one of the stronger performing days on its retail calendar.

"A traffic count of that magnitude usually only happens on Boxing Day so we’re thrilled to get that many people into Melbourne Central at this time of year.

"The One Day Shopping Festival is an event part of our marketing strategy which aims to raise the bar of the traditional consumer shopping experience and provide shoppers with an interactive and entertaining experience.”

Activations included interactive style and beauty workshops, instantly redeemable discounts and special offers from retailers.

Footwear icon Converse also enlisted singer Jade MacRae to perform at its flagship store, while a broader centre-wide treasure hunt was also staged.

Other highlights included a speed dating event, a live performance by Melbourne band Loon Lake and a pop-up bar.

The One Day Shopping Festival follows the recent introduction of Melbourne Central's QR codes program.

The program allows customers to claim instant rewards when they are in the centre.

Melbourne Central stores include Guess, Converse, Oroton and Cue.
