Aboriginal-led and controlled, and majority Aboriginal-owned social enterprise Clothing The Gaps is now a Certified B-Corp.
The Victorian business is well known for its conversation-starting garments as well as its #FreeTheFlag campaign which worked to release the Aboriginal flag from its previous licensing agreements, meaning it is now free for public use.
"We are committed to using our brand and platform to campaign, educate and elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ voices and causes," Clothing The Gaps told B Corp.
"Clothing The Gaps creates merch with a message designed to spark important conversations.
"We make clothes that influence social change by uniting people (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) through fashion and a cause," the business said.
Alongside its garments, Clothing The Gaps works to create change within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through employment opportunities, with 81% of its team identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Further, in the six months between July-December 2021 Clothing The Gaps generated almost 8,000 hours of employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with 4,992.42 of those hours being for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth (15-24).
"We are proud that our social enterprise, through the way we choose to do business in our retail and distribution space, is a hub of Indigenous employment," the business added.
"We strive to be a preferred employer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, actively supporting them to grow and pursue their life goals and ambitions," Clothing The Gaps told B Corp.
In 2021, the business established the Clothing The Gaps Foundation - an independent Aboriginal-led not for profit run by public health practitioners - which aims to reduce the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous people in Australia.
"We are a ‘profit for purpose’ organisation and use business as a vehicle to self-determine our future through profit, efforts and resources supporting and helping to fund the impactful work of the Clothing The Gaps Foundation," Clothing The Gaps added.
Clothing The Gaps operates an online store, its flagship store in Brunswick and a pop-up in Northcote.
