Best & Less divides consumers

Comments Comments

Discount department retailer Best & Less has come under fire for allegedly promoting sexist and offensive slogans on its latest children's clothing line.

Consumers have taken to the company's Facebook page to voice concerns over the range which features a range of phrases on t-shirts including '#LADIESMAN', 'Hide Your Daughters' and 'I'm Only Here For the Ladies'.

There have also been complaints lodged about one girls' clothing item that depicts the slogan 'Love You Long Time', with many concerned that the phrase has derogatory connotations with the sex industry and therefore highly inappropriate for children's clothing.

Despite the criticism, some customers have shown their support to Big W claiming that the accusations have been blown out of proportion.

Big W has responded to complaints with the following statement:

“We have had a number of comments regarding the fleecy jumper within our girls wear, which may have caused offence to some. The item in question is in tune with the fact that little girls love everything to do with "love" and puppies. This item has been popular with many kids and mums who have understood that the statement is as untended, innocent and fun, and not the offensive message as interpreted by some. We do not wish to offend anyone and as such have taken action to remove the item from our shelves. Thank you."

The incident follows similar outrage expressed by consumers following a graphic print t-shirt released by youthwear retailer Jay Jays that sparked accusations of misogyny and sexism.
