MELBOURNE: Next month's Melbourne International Design festival looks set to be a celebration of innovative fashion. Hosted by the National Design Centre from July 17 to 27, fashion-related events would include 'Envelope', consisting of fashion workshops and an exhibition presented by Melbourne designers Anthea Van Kopplen and Ellie Mücke.

According to Design Centre spokesperson Alice Blackwood, Envelope referred to a garment that could be worn in numerous ways, as a coat, skirt, dress or top. The Envelope could also be made into a shelter when five or more people come together.

During the festival, Envelope would be on show in Melbourne's smallest laneway café, Switchboard, she said.

"As part of the Envelope program, Van Kopplen and Mücke's daily workshops will encourage participants to draw inspiration from pre-made garments and accessories, before donning their designer hat to hand stitch and create one unique garment."

Fashion pieces created during the workshops would be judged by a panel, with winning designs showcased in a runway show on Friday July 25.

Priced $25, participants can register for the workshops by email at antheavk@optusnet.com.au.
