Zara plans to increase the number of countries involved in its 'Closing The Loop' strategy.

The initiative is part of the company's bid to participate in the circular economy concept.

In its first year, the move collected over 7,100 tonnes of garments, footwear and accessories via special containers placed in the company's stores, offices and logistics platforms.

The end-of-life initiative is being carried out in collaboration with bodies such as Caritas, the Red Cross, Oxfam and China Environmental Protection Foundation in 534 stores and eight markets.

These include Spain, Portugal, UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Denmark, China and Sweden.

The plan is to increase the number of collection points and countries involved going forward.

Zara has also vowed to increase its use of sustainable raw materials and fabrics, which formed the basis of capsule collections such as Zara Join Life and Oysho Weare the Change.

This saw more than 44 million sustainable garments featuring special labels pushed to market.

Finally, Zara has committed to the rollout of more sustainable store fronts.

A total of 4,519 stores, over 71% of its retail footprint, deliver average savings in terms of water and energy consumption of 40% and 20%, respectively relative to conventional stores.
