The move towards online shopping coincides with consumers deserting main street retail, according to a study conducted by Ipsos Global Adviser.

The study, exploring changes in shopping habits and environments, was conducted in 24 countries around the world.

Consumers reported seeing fewer traditional “main street” businesses, while increasingly resorting to digital and convenience-focused alternatives, chains or franchise stores.

In Australia, independently-owned and operated non-chain stores are the third highest stores vanishing from local shopping areas.

Some 35% of Australians reported seeing less of these in the study.

In contrast, pharmacies, restaurants and cafes are perceived to be increasing in addition to gyms and fitness providers.

There are also more vacant stores, with 30% of Australians seeing more of these compared to 25% globally.
