Kathmandu and Lululemon athletica Australia have been recognised for their sustainability efforts.

Both were named the winners at the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation's (APCO) annual awards on August 23 in Melbourne.

APCO enables businesses, government and industry to design and utilise more sustainable packaging throughout the supply chain to reduce the environmental impact of packaging in Australia.

To take out an award for the retail category, Kathmandu focused on sourcing responsible, traceable and sustainable packaging materials and upcycled over 3.9 million post-consumer plastic bottles.

Lululemon reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill by recycling approximately 85% of its waste in Australia.

It also incorporated certified and recycled content into various packaging streams, such as delivery boxes, swing tags and more.

Kathmandu's Oliver Milliner encouraged other retailers to step up their game.

“Sustainability is absolutely core to everything we do. It’s great that APCO recognises that Kathmandu is digging deep into environmental issues and we’d like to see other retail companies getting involved as well."

Birkenstock Australia and Country Road Group were also named as finalists in the Awards.

All finalists were selected based on their performance in sustainable packaging design, comprehensive recycling systems and product stewardship activities to develop sustainable supply chains.
