Japanese retailer Uniqlo has opened the doors its first Australian store - and a dedicated e-commerce site to boot.

The new store, situated in Emporium Melbourne, saw more than 20,000 customers flood through its doors on the first day of trade.

In conjunction with the store opening, Uniqlo Australia’s e-commerce platform went live at 10am.

Australians will now be able to purchase Uniqlo apparel online, with garments to be packed and shipped locally to customers across Australia.

Fast Retailing chief executive Tadashi Yanai joined a formal ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the Melbourne store opening.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and Deputy Lord Major Susan Riley were also in attendance.

Yanai said the brand, a subsidiary of Fast Retailing, is excited to be opening the doors to its first domestic store.

"It feels fitting for the store to be housed in Emporium, the CBD’s newest retail precinct, and at the heart of Melbourne – Australia’s fashion capital.

"We have been honoured with the response to the launch so far and look forward to welcoming many more Melbournians in store in the coming months.”

The store features a sales floor of over 2,180 square meters spread across four floors – two basement floors and two above ground floors.

Uniqlo will offer a range of men’s, women’s, kids’ and babies’ clothes.

Yanai confirmed Sydney as the next location for a Uniqlo store.
