Target axed in favour of Kmart

Target will be replaced by Kmart in the redevelopment of The Pines Shopping Centre, Melbourne.

The centre will undergo one of the Target-to-Kmart transformations in the state, as parent company Wesfarmers looks to rebrand unperforming Kmart stores.

The construction of its sister brand Target store will commence Monday, with doors expected to open before Christmas.

Target will remain open and trading up until November 9, however some stock lines will not be refreshed and some services such as lay-by will no longer be available.

The Pines has attracted a host of new stores as part of its redevelopment including Suzanne Grae, which will open next month.

The centre is operated by shopping centre group Stockland.

Stockland CEO of commercial property John Schroder said it will continue to invest in further reburbishments.

“We’re proud to be bringing new fashions, tastes and entertainment retailers to The Pines to offer our customers an even better retail experience.

"The calibre of new brands that have recently opened their doors, or will soon begin trading, is exceptional and will be a great addition to our current stable of retailers at the centre."

The new Kmart store is expected to officially open in early December 2016.

"We're very excited to welcome Kmart to Stockland The Pines in time for Christmas," Schroder said.

"This new store will complement the current retail offer and provide shoppers with a great range of products across home, entertainment, clothing and toys at everyday low prices."
