RMIT fashion lecturer Carolyn Hewat has launched a new online learning and networking platform for fashion design students.

Studio Cut Make Trim is designed to support their education with 24/7 access to web tutorials, live webinars, chat forums and Q&A sessions.

The platform has launched with garment construction tutorials and will soon extend into pattern drafting, portfolio presentation, research development and fashion illustration.

Presentations will be hosted by fashion designers and educators.

Hewat said she identified a gap in the education system when studying fashion design at RMIT University in the early 2000s.

“Back then there wasn’t anywhere for students to access trusted resources outside of the classroom, and today, my students often convey to me the feeling of being overwhelmed by YouTube ‘experts’ who claim to know best practice.

"More often that not these are home sewers, using home sewing techniques. Which is totally cool, but not what fashion students need."
