Ragtrader editor Assia Benmedjdoub reports on a growing industry-wide campaign.

Australia's pre-eminent fashion voices have joined a debate on climate change and its impact on trading seasons.

A report by ragtrader.com.au last week is igniting fierce debate on social media, with many commentators urging an industry-wide response.

Key stakeholders are pushing for a nationwide change in delivery windows for autumn/winter and spring/summer to coincide with rising temperatures.

The move would ensure greater opportunity for full-margin sales over discounting and excess inventory stockpiles.

Now some of the nation's most respected fashion figures have joined the discussion.

Commenting on social media, Australian designer Jayson Brunsdon said the industry needs to evolve.

"I remember in the 80s/90s, winter delivery was in March/April and summer was August/September.

"That was when it got cold in March and warm in August. Now it gets cold in June and warm in October.

"Fashion needs to move with climate change. I mean I don't even think of buying winter clothes now until I need them in June."

Sales periods are strictly controlled in France, sparking calls for a similar regulatory framework in Australia.

Respected fashion journalist Janice Breen Burns noted the overwhelming response from boutiques to the story.

"I remember the same plea to retailers for a 'united approach' 35 years ago...is it finally possible?," she wrote.
