Tamworth-based Aboriginal fashion designer Colleen Tighe Johnson has won big.

Her Buluuy Mirii label has scooped the NSW Emerging Creative Talent Award.

She accepted her win at the 2018 NSW Creative Achievement Awards on Tuesday night.

She was among three finalists from a pool of 70 entrants.

The award is given to to a rising talent who has shown leadership, originality and innovation in growing the industry’s global profile.

The NSW Emerging Creative Talent Award also includes a $15,000 cash prize for career development.

Johnson is a Gomeroi fashion designer from rural NSW.

Her Buluuy Mirrii designs harness the spirit of the Gomeroi Dreaming at haute couture international runways.

In February and the autumn of 2017, Johnson showcased her designs in New York.

She was the first international Indigenous designer to showcase on the first day of PLITZS New York City Fashion Week.

Her social enterprise, Miyay Mirrii, delivers life-skills workshops to regional NSW Aboriginal youth.
