Melbourne has claimed another design first.

Chadstone The Fashion Capital shopping centre has developed the country's first gridshell roof.

The gridshell structure will be revealed to customers on October 13, when the centre opens the first phase of its $660 million redevelopment.

The roof features 2,700 quadrilateral, square and rectangular unique glass panels of variable size.

These panels collectively weigh more than 500 tonnes.

Each panel of glass was manufactured and coated in Germany, then installed independently, with each panel taking approximately 15 minutes to be guided in place by hand.

More than 2,000 tonnes of scaffolding was erected where the gridshell was built.

It covers more than 7,000 square metres of roof area and is free spanning up to 42 metres.

Vicinity Centres CEO Angus McNaughton said the project engaged local and global partners.

“From London to Germany, then the Czech Republic to Australia, the impressive gridshell design and development displays the collaboration of some of the best architects and engineers from around the world.”

Initially designed by British structural engineering company Atelier One, a new 3D modelling software was developed specifically for the gridshell project in order to bring it to life.
