Kmart wunderkind Guy Russo has left the building.

Russo will retire as Wesfarmers head of department stores in November, after 10 years.

Russo is credited with turning the ailing fortunes of Kmart Australia, increasing earnings five-fold during his reign.

Despite a $306 million pre-tax writedown of its sister business Target Australia this week, he also reduced its cost base and returned it to profitability.

Following November, Russo will remain as an advisor to Wesfarmers for the remainder of the 2019 financial year.

Russo will be replaced by Kmart managing director Ian Bailey, who will run the department stores division.

Chief financial officer of department stores Marina Joanou has been tapped to head up Target.

Wesfarmers chief executive Rob Scott praised Russo's contribution.

"Guy leaves a valuable legacy that is reflected in the record profit result for the department stores division for the 2018 financial year," he said.

"He has led a world-class turnaround of Kmart into one of Australia's best product development and retail companies.

"Under Guy's leadership, Kmart's earnings have increased more than five-fold and more recently he has led a significant reset of Target, reducing its cost base and returning it to profitability."

While Wesfarmers recorded a 58% dive in profits for the year, department store profits leaped 21.5% to $660 million in the 2018 financial year.
