A UK gender pay gap report has caused a global discussion around the issue of pay disparity as it was revealed that several high-profile brands had significant pay gaps between male and female employees.

Brands including Victoria's Secret, Burberry and Karen Millen reported a significant pay gap in the average hourly rate across their respective companies.

Victoria's Secret announced that their female employees had an average hourly rate 15.1% lower than males.

Burberry announced a difference of 25.9% while Karen Millen had a staggering disparity of 50% in average hourly rate.

The Australian government does not currently publish data from individual companies but does provide industry-wide reports for the clothing retail industry from their Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

The 2017 report suggests that the gap in total remuneration for full-time employees across the industry peaked at 28.3%, up from 27.5% in 2016.

It also highlighted that at the managerial level, there was a difference in pay of 42.1% for full-time employees in the fashion retail industry, well above the average of 27.2% for all other industries.
