Global footwear brand Skechers has launched a campaign urging Australians to check in with a podiatrist, as it unleashes a new wide-fit collection.

The launch follows a study found between 63% and 72% of people wear shoes that do not accommodate either the width or length dimensions of their feet.

The 2018 study by La Trobe University’s Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre found a large proportion of the population wear incorrectly sized footwear.

This is associated with foot pain and foot disorders such as plantar fasciitis, hallux valgus, lesser toe deformities, metatarsalgia, bunions, blisters, corns and calluses.

The research findings showed that incorrect footwear is significantly associated with foot pain and poorer overall foot health.

The study suggests greater emphasis needs to be placed on footwear fitting education with one of the recommendations being that footwear manufacturers should be providing a greater range of widths for each length sizing option in order to accommodate feet with wider dimensions.

Skechers Australia representative Deena Colman said the demand for wide-fit shoes in the Australia footwear market has never been stronger.

“Within the last year, we’ve seen a huge increase in Australians asking for wider-fitting footwear as the population ages and people’s lives continue to get busier,” she said.

“Skechers new range of wide-fit shoes are just another way we can continue to be a global leader in the footwear industry; offering comfortable, high-quality products at an affordable price for the whole family – men, women and children.”

Skechers is looking to tap into the growing market, with a pair from the new range starting from $119.99.
