SYDNEY: NSW Fair Trading has issued a warning to consumers who shop online, with consumer complaints significantly up last year.

In 2009 the organisation received 3,396 complaints about online trading including 230 complaints about online auctions. This was an increase of 33.5 per cent from 2008.

Over 50 per cent of complaints received related to failure to deliver goods, or partial delivery of goods. Faults, damages or products not matching the descriptions provided were also common complaints.

The report said 20 per cent of complaints related directly to refunds, overcharging and other money issues.

NSW Fair Trading said that while shopping online was easy and convenient, it was important to be alert to the potential pitfalls.

It advised shoppers to do research and only buy from sites known and trusted. It said to check the site was an established, reputable business with a physical address and be alert to the site's refund and return policy.

Looking out for hidden costs such as packaging, delivery or currency conversion were also recommended.

The organisation reminded customers not to provide bank account details, credit card numbers or other personal information to companies they do not completely trust. It also said to keep receipts and carefully check credit card statements.
