SYDNEY: Fashion design student Ashleigh Hawdon has won the NSW Business Chamber Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Leather Industry Award, with a $10,000 prize.

The 23 year old University of Technology (UTS) student won the seventh annual competition for a business plan for a fashion label called Malua.

The award was sponsored by the NSW Business Chamber in conjunction with the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at UTS. It was open to final year students in the Textiles, Fashion and Design degree who undertook a business planning course.

The $10,000 award is specifically to invest in launching a business, comprising a $6,000 cheque and $4,000 of support from the NSW Business Chamber.

Runners up were Callista Potts and Tali Shuvalov. Both received a $500 cheque and membership of NSW Business Chamber.

Previous winners include Becky Cooper and Bridget Currer of independent label Bec&Bridge.

The winners were announced at UTS' Annual Fashion Show last week.
