In an Australian Fashion Week special, ragtrader.com.au asks key buyers about trade, trends and what's on their agenda. First up is Nihi buyer Karen Quinones, who reveals the top Australian fashion brands at her boutique.
Can you share the top Australian designer brands that your company currently stocks?
Matteau, Patrick Johnson, Hannah Artwear
What designer collections are you most looking forward to seeing at AFW this year?
I’m most interested in seeing emerging designers and what innovations and newness they bring
Which market does your company trade in and what are the key local fashion trends there right now?
Resortwear 12 months a year. I love working with the locals. I’ve partnered with a Sumbanese organization supporting women of domestic violence who are masters in the art of ikat weaving. By supporting these women on the Island of Sumba, we are providing a means for them to empower themselves through their craft. I in turn make unique one-of-a-kind pieces our clients love and cherish, each piece woven with the story of the woman who made it.
Has your buying strategies changed in recent months amid global economic challenges?
Our business is up exponentially (a large percentage of our clientele is American, secondary market is Australia). What we focus on mainly is giving the client something unique, a piece that is great for travel, translates to their everyday lives and gives them something that reminds them of their magical stay at Nihi
What do you predict will be the next big fashion trend?
To be honest, I am not about trends, I’ve never followed them. I’ve always remained loyal to my aesthetic, classic with a twist.
