Footwear boutique chain Zomp has taken a creative approach to promote its offering via the State of Design Festival.

In line with the the festival's theme, the Melbourne-based retailer has created an installation to represent “Design That Moves”, which will be displayed at its Flinders Lane store from July 18 to August 1, as part of the “Look.Stop.Shop” section of the State of Design Festival.

“Look.Stop.Shop” is a design-led walk through Melbourne’s City Centre which highlights special window displays and in-store installations from a selected group of retailers.

The Zomp 3D diorama will be a characterisation of shoes, following their lives by tracking their journey through the different contexts of life set in the Melbourne cityscape. The entire installation will be made using pre-loved materials and products sourced from the designers and excess materials from Zomp stores highlighting the physical “transformation” or “movement” of materials from one place or use to another.

The excess materials, which include shoe boxes and cartons, excess paints and dyes, old and vintage shoe samples have also been used to promote recycling and sustainable design.

However, Zomp marketing coordinator Erin McKinlay said Zomp’s involvement in the State of Design Festival is part of a broader initiative to utilise and support emerging talents and “excite consumers”.

“The Look.Shop.Stop program provides the perfect platform for us to communicate our commitment to art and design initiatives aimed at encouraging young, emerging and Australian designers whilst simultaneously offering consumers the opportunity to discover something new,” she said.

Zomp is a privately-owned chain of boutique women’s shoe stores that started in Perth over 30 years ago. The chain is now made up of eight stores in total – two in Perth, three in Melbourne, two in Sydney and one in Brisbane.

The State of Design Festival, established in 2004, is the largest and most innovative design event in Australia and aims to increase the awareness of the value of design and showcase how design generates innovation, promotes sustainability and adds value to business and society.
