The Australian Good Design Awards has awarded G-Star the Fashion Impact Award for its 'Most Sustainable Jeans Ever' collection.

The jeans feature a number of sustainable attributes, including an Indigo dye with 70% less chemicals.

The products are also manufacured from 100% organic cotton, no salt and buttons free of toxic chemicals.

G-Star also claims that it uses a number of sustainable washing techniques and each pair is 98% recyclable.

The Good Design Awards Jury said the jeans have set the benchmark for sustainable denim.

"G-Star Raw’s purpose is clear - to develop the most sustainable jean ever.

"They have utilised best practice certification, obtaining Gold Cradle to Cradle certification for the denim fabric, the first Gold certification for denim fabric in the world.

"They have applied rigorous requirements across dyes, water and energy use as well as carbon management," the panel said.

The Good Design Awards celebrate and recognise the best new products or services in the Australian market, highlighting excellence in fashion, architectural design, engineering, digital communication design and social impact.

The Fashion Impact Award was announced on July 11 at the 61st annual Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony in Sydney.
