Alipay has released insights on the 2019 Lunar New Year (LNY) period, including new data on the spending habits of Chinese tourists to Australia.
Australia ranked ninth globally in Alipay transaction volume over LNY – the same as 2018.
The transaction volume in Australia increased 110%, while the average spend per person increased by 40%.
Alipay transaction volume at duty free stores increased 670% year-on-year, and spend per person increased by 20%.
Globally, offline in-store transaction value surged 2.2 times year-on-year.
China is Australia's larges and most valuable tourism market, accounting for 81% of the growth in tourism spending in Australia in the last 12 months.
More than 1.4 million Chinese tourists travelled to Australia in the year ending November 2018 and spent more than $11.5 billion.
