Industry powerbroker Solomon Lew has taken the GST threshold debate into his own hands.

The Premier Investments' chairman has asked his executive team to find a path to ship online product to Australia GST and Duty Free next year.

International retailers are currently exempted from applying and collecting GST for all merchandise under $1000.

"This follows in the footsteps of the approval of the Australian Government of Australia Post’s recent initiative to expand the path of non - collection of GST and customs duties," he said at the company's annual general meeting.

"The time for inquiries, taskforces, poor quality advice, Commonwealth/State relation intrigues and the linking of the issue to broader tax reform initiatives has passed – urgent action is needed to ensure that this vibrant and key component of the Australian economy is able to operate under fair competitive rules."

Lew said the tax exemption is unparalleled internationally and described it as a public policy failure.

Lew referenced Ernst & Young statistics which identified the foregone tax revenues as $2.49 billion over three years.

"The Australian public policy inaction stands in stark and lonely contrast to every comparable government, which ha ve already acted to ensure fair competition in their domestic markets – the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, European Union, and so on."
