The Fair Work Ombudsman could consider litigation against Wesfarmers, after the company revealed it had underpaid workers $15 million over the past nine years.

Wesfarmers is parent company to Kmart, Target, Bunnings and other retail businesses.

Wesfarmers discovered the mistake when updating its industrial and safety division payroll system, revealing 6000 staff had been underpaid dating back to 2010.

It followed news it had underpaid its Bunnings hardware chain superannuation entitlements for nearly ten years.

The latest oversight concerns staff at retailer Blackwoods, workwear manufacturer Workwear Group, industrial gas supplier Coregas and health and safety management company Greencap.

While Wesfarmers reported the breach to the Fair Work Ombudsman, Ombudsman Sandra Parker said this was not good enough.

"The Fair Work Ombudsman will be holding Wesfarmers to account after self-disclosing significant underpayments of its workers.

"Each week, another large company is publicly admitting that they failed to ensure staff are receiving their lawful entitlements.

"This simply is not good enough.

"Companies will be held accountable for breaching workplace laws.

"Companies and their Boards are on notice that we will consider the full range of enforcement options available under the Fair Work Act, including litigation where appropriate."

Sunglass Hat, Michael Hill, MJ Bale and Super Retail Group have also been involved in underpayment scandals this year.
