Independent retailers are set to reclaim a slice of Sydney's $3 billion retail pie.

Designer exhibitions, exclusive promotions, styling advice and bespoke fashion events are part of a resurgence being staged next month.

The events will form the City’s Fashion Saturday campaign, celebrating fashion in Sydney’s villages.

On Saturday 12 September, more than 100 businesses and fashion retailers across Darlinghurst, Newtown, Paddington, Potts Point, Pyrmont and Surry Hills will take part in the campaign.

They will stage a variety of events from fashion parades and styling workshops to in-store discounts and the Collette Dinnigan: Unlaced exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum.

Promising to be the ‘ultimate shopping day’ in Sydney’s villages, consumers can treat themselves to a gourmet lunch at one of the participating village restaurants.

They can also enjoy a screening of the new release Women He’s Undressed, about the life of Australian costume designer Orry-Kelly at the Golden Age Cinema.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the event celebrates the city's fashion culture and supports retailers.

“This one day event, featuring our best independent retailers, designers, bars and restaurants aims to reintroduce shoppers to the special retail experience found in our unique and diverse city.

“From Potts Point to Surry Hills, Paddington to Newtown our villages offer a glimpse of all that the fashion world has to offer. Our villages are exciting to visit, stroll, shop and enjoy something to eat and drink.

“With retail generating an estimated $3 billion for our city’s economy each year, events like this are vital to our status as a global city, especially as Sydney is Australia’s premier retail destination.

“Our city is home to some of Australia’s most exciting fashion designers and retailers, and I encourage everyone to show their support by shopping at the independent retailers in their local area this Fashion Saturday.”

Fashion Saturday is part of a season of spring events dedicated to celebrating style in Sydney.

Sydney Is Fashion also includes Vogue Fashion’s Night Out on 3 September and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Sydney from 24-26 September.
