Jeanswest, Rivers, Myer and Target have all recalled products with hazardous carcinogenic dyes this year. But what is the cost to retailers to root this out?

Apparel and Textile Industries (ATI) Group has issued its response into an enquiry into the controversial use of certain azo dyes.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is investigating additional costs to limit the use of these dyes in clothing, textile and leather articles.

The move was prompted by a massive recall of products earlier this year, with over 200,000 items blacklisted since February.

ATI has argued most major retailers are lagging behind their international counterparts when it comes to understanding the use of azo dyes.

ATI recommended the employment of one additional technically trained employee to manage compliance.

Costs for the first year, including salary and overheads, were pitched at a consevative $100,000 to $300,000.
