Australian swimwear brand Seafolly is putting down roots in the mainland China market as it prepares a localised expansion in the East Asia market.

The move marks the iconic brand’s latest international expansion, following recent successful expansion across the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

This expansion is being supported by a newly opened Shanghai office, set to drive local operations, partnerships and brand building. Seafolly has officially launched across China’s leading social e-commerce platforms, including Rednote, Douyin and Tmall.

According to Seafolly, early brand awareness efforts, driven by local influencer partnerships and livestream campaigns, have generated strong engagement and positive consumer sentiment, creating significant momentum as Seafolly accelerates its expansion across the region.

Building on this early success, the brand is now focused on its next phase of growth, with physical retail stores planned within the first year of operation to further strengthen its presence.

“Our expansion into China represents a significant milestone in Seafolly’s international growth strategy,” Seafolly CEO Brendan Santamaria said.

“We’ve seen strong momentum across our global markets, and the appetite for premium Australian lifestyle brands in China continues to grow. Establishing a local presence in Shanghai allows us to build the brand authentically and connect directly with consumers.”

The expansion also reflects a broader shift within the swimwear category, with a few research firms projecting growth in the Australian market. 6W Research is projecting a 5.95 per cent CAGR growth for Australian swimwear up to 2032.

This also underscores the growing momentum of Australian brands entering international markets, including Zimmermann opening its first store in Hong Kong.

Seafolly is also reporting growing demand from Chinese consumers, with travel and discretionary spending continuing to grow post-pandemic.
