Business turnover across the retail sector has lifted by 0.5 per cent in June 2025 and is above the 13-industry aggregate for the month, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Retail has reported the fourth highest lift in turnover for the month, ahead of information media and technologies (up 0.2 per cent) and behind administrative and support services (up 1 per cent), mining (up 2.1 per cent) and arts and recreation services (3.5 per cent).

ABS head of business statistics Robert Ewing said the arts and recreation services industry’s highest rise in June, followed a 4.7 per cent fall in May 2025.

With mining, its monthly lift in June comes amid a year-on-year fall in the month of 2.1 per cent.

On the other end of the spectrum, other services – which includes personal, civic, professional and repair services, as well as private households employing staff – reported the highest fall in turnover at 2.2 per cent, with professional, scientific, and technical services also down heavily by 2 per cent month-on-month. 

For retail year-on-year in June, the industry recorded a lift of 1.9 per cent, 1 percentage point below the 13-industry aggregate of 2.9 per cent between June 2025 and June 2024. 

The industries that saw the largest annual rises were manufacturing (up 7.8 per cent), and transport, postal and warehousing (up 5.9 per cent).

In trend terms, the 13-industry aggregate showed a 0.1 per cent rise in business turnover in June 2025.
