Surfwear operator Project Blank has launched a new initiative to combat wetsuit waste.

Project Blank has partnered with circular fashion business Upparel to recycle old wetsuits, encouraging customers to send their garments for repurposing.

If collected wetsuits are in a usable condition, they are donated to charity by the brand.

If not, the materials are shredded and the fibres are used to create new yarn or turned into items such as insulation, roof tiles and stuffing for dog beds.

Project Blank head of marketing Joshua Small said the campaign is part of a broader circularity push.

"We’re constantly on the hunt for ways to increase the sustainability of our products at Project Blank, whether it’s utilising plant-based materials and regenerative fibres, plastic neutrality or offering a selection of recycling and upcycling initiatives that “close the loop” of our manufacturing process.

"It’s very exciting to be partnering with Upparel on a tangible solution to big surf’s landfill problem."

In addition to working with Upparel, Project Blank has partnered with Into Carry, offering consumers the chance to turn their wetsuits into premium carry bags.
