Pink Zebra is the latest designer womenswear retailer to enter voluntary administration this year, following the path of Belinda, Satch and Bettina Liano.

The retailer operates five stores across Sydney and Melbourne as well as an e-commerce site. It was placed into the hands of Angus Gordon of Macquarie Gordon & Co last week.

Owner Sarah Paykel claimed the appointment of administrators was not a "traditional one" as the business will be restructured into a global fashion e-boutique.

She claimed the e-boutique concept was initially scheduled to launch next year. Paykel said the company is working with administrators to secure further equity to assist with the restructure.

"As is the case for many retailers, the past six months has seen us battling the rough retail seas. In this time we have faced the reality that the world has changed significantly since we opened the doors of the first Pink Zebra store almost six years ago."

The company is continuing to trade through the process.

Pink Zebra specialises in premium American brands including J Brand, Kate Spade, Beyond Vintage, Bailey & Taylor, Hyde Collection, Love Sam, Love Shop, Malibu Denim, MK2K and Michael Lauren.

Paykel is confident the new e-tail model will still go ahead, allowing customers to buy US labels at online prices.

"Customers can ‘try before they buy’ and we arrange for fast delivery and easy returns for them. [It] will combine high tech with high fashion, bringing all the benefits of global online shopping, without any of the usual hassles of returns, including the time it takes for returns to be received, the wait for a refund, and sometimes, the disappointment of the goods being not quite what you expected."
