The business

"We operate 12 [core] brands including Clarks, Hush Puppies, Mossimo, Superdry, Julius Marlow, Grosby, Volley, Slazenger, Dunlop, Sachi and Freshjive

"In addition our Iconix JV sub-licenses iconic brands like Lee Cooper, Umbro, Material World by Madonna, London Fog, Zoo York, Ed Hardy and Starter.

"Finally, our Global Trading Footwear division houses a suite of brands that predominantly cover a broad value footwear offer, including Candy, Pierre Fontaine, Jellies and Bonds."

The strategy

"Late last year we completed a joint venture with Iconix Group, the world’s largest lifestyle brand licensing company (and second largest licensing company of any kind after Disney).

"This joint venture is a strategic move, giving us greater exposure to the licensing business model, securing our relationship with Mossimo and giving us growth pathways through our expanded portfolio that now includes Lee Cooper, Umbro, Zoo York and Starter."

The turnaround

"The biggest challenge is getting the balance right between turnaround and growth.

"We have had many challenges in getting our base business sustainable, but we have also been conscious of the need to keep evolving our business model while we fix the basics – the two are not incompatible but it does stretch the focus of the management team.

"In effect everyone is doing three jobs simultaneously – fixing the business, running the business and creating a new business."

The future

"We are always in the market for the right brands, providing the model suits our business and can generate sustainable profit.

"Currently we are focused on building the Iconix business in Australia, which is delivering significant growth through brands like Lee Cooper (at Big W) and Umbro (at Rebel Sport)."
