Department store Myer has emerged as the top dog in consumers eyes, over David Jones, according to a recent survey.

The retailer has been crowned as Department Store of the Year at the second annual Roy Morgan Research Customer Satisfaction Awards, de-throning last year’s winner David Jones.

The results are part of a study by Roy Morgan Research which collected satisfaction ratings through its 2012 Consumer Single Source survey of over 50,000 Australians. Results also incorporated figures from its Business Single Source survey of 22,000 decision makers.

Companies with the best ratings overall, including Myer, were awarded as part of the Roy Morgan Research Customer Satisfaction Awards, with Best & Less also named as the best discount department store.

Womenswear chain Suzanne Grae was awarded Clothing Store of the Year, with Williams selected as Shoestore of the Year, and Sportspower crowned Sports Store of the Year.

The retailers joined other winning companies including Apple, Aldi, and Virgin Mobile, NABM, The Good Guys, Internode, Michel’s Patisserie, Crowne Plaza and JB Hi-Fi.

Commenting on the results, Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine said the survey results offer a rare insight into consumers' attitudes to retailers.

“Now in only its second year, these awards are already recognised as currency in many industries, being the most accurate and trusted indicators of customer satisfaction in Australia.

“By integrating customer satisfaction measures with our world-leading Consumer and Business Single Source surveys, we offer businesses incomparable research into who their satisfied customers are and where they can seek more of them,” he said.

“Roy Morgan Research congratulates not only the winners but all successful businesses, large and small, that consistently strive to satisfy their customers.”
