Myer has refuted claims that more of its department stores will close across Australia.

Following an announcement that a Myer in Forest Hill, Victoria, will shut in January, a Myer spokesman said they will be constantly reviewing the merits of all stores, particularly when entering lease renewal discussions.

However, despite figures in the national press stating that between five and 17 Myer stores could close, a Myer spokesman said this is not accurate.

The retail giant, which plans to open 12 more stores by 2015, taking its total to 79, said the optimum amount of department stores for them is between 75 and 80 - meaning a handful 'could' shut in the future.

“This does not mean that some will close and we have no plans to close any more at this time,” a Myer spokesman said. “All of our stores are profitable, but some stores generate lower returns. “While we remain committed to our new store rollout strategy, it is necessary to constantly review the merits of all new and existing stores, particularly as we enter lease renewal discussions.”

As online retail activity continues to take away sales from bricks and mortar retailers, Myer bosses say their focus is to maintain a happy retail medium - while keeping a firm eye on store progress.

Information from Myer One loyalty cards revealed that shoppers living near the 4,500sqm, Forest Hill Myer store, were still choosing to travel further to shop at larger format Myer stores - which can be up to 20,000sqm in size

“Our customers are increasingly demanding choice in how they shop and interact with us – in store, online and with mobile devices,” a spokesman said. “We are adapting in this fast changing environment and are focusing on building an effective online presence and embracing social media and digital in our everyday marketing activity.”

Myer's website revamp is due to be completed by March next year.
