Department store Myer has made an acquisition of its own, as rival David Jones inches closer to a takeover.

The retailer has secured designer label By Johnny as a department store exclusive, marking the launch of the emerging womenswear brand into wider distribution.

Founded by Australian designer Johnny Schembri in 2009, By Johnny is recognised for its innovative ‘fabric manipulation’ technique, creating signature geometric patterns and digital prints.

The label will launch in Myer from August 2014 and will be available in four stores nationwide - Melbourne, Sydney, Bondi and Chadstone. The brand will also be available online at myer.com.au.

The initial By Johnny collection drop – spring/summer 2015 – is entitled ‘Spectrum’, and was first seen on the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) in April.

The range explores the idea of light and shade working through the colour spectrum, embodying muted sorbets – white, lavender, calamine pink; bold primary colours – bright tangerines, sky blue, grass green; and reflective metallic.

Commenting on the addition to its designer stable, Myer group general manager of women’s fashion Nicole Naccarella said she is excited about attracting the coveted label to Myer.

“We are delighted to welcome the enormously popular by johnny brand to Myer in August 2014 as a department store exclusive. by johnny is one of Australia’s most sought-after fashion labels and its introduction heading into the new season is a major coup for Myer.

The By Johnny label is renowned for its unique design edge, eye-catching prints and contemporary clean lines that have fast become a favourite among celebrities and fashion lovers. We know Johnny’s modern designs will resonate with our customers.”

By Johnny joins the Myer portfolio of Australian designer brands, including Alex Perry, Maticevski, Aurelio Costarella, Ellery and Yeojin Bae.

Commenting on the coup, Schembri said he is delighted that the label is joining the prestigious Myer designer stable.

“Myer is a great supporter to Australian Fashion designers and it is the right time for the brand to become an integral part of such an iconic department store as Myer. The by johnny team and I are very excited for what the future holds.”

Schembri also recently showcased select pieces of his 'Spectrum' collection for sale as part of the first-ever MBFWA e-boutique.

Find out what he and other designers had to say about the experience in the June print edition of Ragtrader magazine – out May 30, 2014.
