The National Retail Association (NRA) is expecting a surge in spending to be attributed to purchases leading up to Mother's Day this Sunday.

Jewellery, flowers and perfumes are set to be the biggest items that consumers fork out on, with cafes and restaurants also predicted to rake in extra revenue.

NRA CEO Trevor Evans believes that if past figures are anything to go buy, retailers should expect a spike in sales.

"In recent years, retail sales for Mother’s Day have increased, on average, by 2.8 per cent year-on-year, and we expect to see similar figures again for 2015.

"If this trend continues, sales this weekend could come close to $1.4 billion.

"Evans also pointed to gift vouchers and certificates as a major option for last minute shoppers.

"One of the things most mums cross their fingers for this time of year is some time out. Pampering treatments such as massages, facials and pedicures are a perfect last minute gift that won’t disappoint.

"Whether it’s her favourite flowers, a gift voucher for a much needed massage or a carefree breakfast at the local café, the NRA would like to wish all Mums a very special day this Sunday."
