MJ Bale has backpayed staff around $500,000, as it joins a growing list of retailers found to be underpaying employees.

The retailer, which has 300 employees across 60 stores, found it had been underpaying staff for several years.

According to the Australian Financial Review,  the retailer handed back wages, interest and supperannuation to casual and full-time staff.

MJ Bale CEO Matt Jensen told the paper that wage underpayments were inadvertent and reflected the complex nature of the general retail award.

Michael Hill, Lush and Super Retail Group have also faced recent cases of underpayment.

Several industry associations have called for a simplification of the award, stating retailers are not looking to undermine their obligations.
