Second-hand boutique Swop has expanded its Melbourne footprint with the opening of a fourth location in South Melbourne, its largest store to date. The new store arrives as Australia's resale sector undergoes a period of rapid, broad-based expansion.

Situated at 82 Clarke St, the new site was designed in collaboration with Studio Gardner, drawing on a New York warehouse aesthetic with a local Melbourne angle.

Swop sells a curated range of second-hand premium and luxury goods across the fashion space. The brand’s new store decor includes a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture sourced from local designers and showrooms, such as Fitzroy's Castorina.

Founder Brigid Gordon said the expansion was driven by demand outgrowing the brand's existing Collingwood store.

"Over time, it became clear that demand was growing beyond what our Collingwood store could hold," Gordon said. "With this new location, the goal was to create a unique space that instantly embraced everyone who entered."

Founded in 2013, Swop operates on a direct-buy model — purchasing stock from its community rather than operating on consignment. Gordon said this underpins its tightly edited curation and authentication process. The brand positions itself as a curated alternative to broader resale marketplaces, drawing inspiration from European fashion houses.

The South Melbourne opening lands amid significant activity across the wider second-hand sector. Australia's second-hand market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 11.88 per cent, with Credence Research forecasting the sector will reach $2.3 billion by 2032, up from $857 million in 2023. Separate research from MMR Statistics values Australia's resale sector at $34.61 billion in 2025, with further growth of close to 10 per cent forecast in 2026.

At the volume end of the market, Salvos Stores has been aggressively expanding its national footprint. The organisation unveiled plans to open more than 35 stores nationwide in 2024, hitting 400 stores by May that year. The network has since grown to over 440 locations across the country.

Global thrift retailer Savers has also been accelerating its Australian presence. The company currently operates 18 stores and two warehouses nationally, employing more than 1,200 staff, having opened six stores in the past two years. After entering the NSW market for the first time with a Hoxton Park store in May 2024, Savers has since opened further locations including a first-of-its-kind three-storey format in Camperdown and a superstore in Auburn. The retailer is also preparing to enter Geelong.

Sydney-based Uturn has similarly been scaling up. The business, which has been operating for nearly two decades, counts boutiques across Bondi Beach, Surry Hills, Rozelle, Newtown and Punchbowl, and launched its first online marketplace in late 2024 with more than 17,000 items.

A 2024 survey commissioned by Savers found that over 80 per cent of shoppers across NSW, Victoria and South Australia had engaged in second-hand shopping, with nearly three quarters of regular thrifters saying at least a quarter of their wardrobe is preloved.

Swop South Melbourne is open seven days, from 10:00am–6:00pm. The brand also trades online.
