Kmart and Target CEO John Gualtieri is set to move over to Officeworks as managing director.

This follows a 17 year career with the Kmart Group business, with Gualtieri commencing as a divisional merchandise manager across home and furniture.

Prior to Kmart, Gualtieri held various managerial positions at department store Myer.

Gualtieri’s appointment comes as the office supply retailer’s current managing director Sarah Hunter announced her resignation from the role today.

Officeworks and the Kmart Group are both retail subsidiaries under Australian conglomerate Wesfarmers, which also owns uniform supplier Workwear Group and home improvement retailer Bunnings.

Gualtieri currently reports to Kmart Group managing director Aleksandra Spaseska.

Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott acknowledged Hunter’s significant contribution to the group.

“For more than six years, Sarah has played a pivotal role in driving Officeworks’ evolution and growth,” Scott said. “Under her leadership, Officeworks has continued to grow and diversify the customer offer.

“Since joining the Group in 2010, Sarah has created value for shareholders across a range of senior roles, including at Coles as the program director of its demerger from Wesfarmers in 2018.

“We thank Sarah for her many contributions to the Group and wish her well in the next phase of her career.”

Hunter said she was proud to have played a role in Officeworks’ success in recent years.

“It has been a privilege to lead Officeworks,” she said. “Since 2019, we have grown revenue by over 8 per cent per annum and made good progress on our strategic agenda.

“Now is the right time for me to take on a new challenge, and I look forward to following Officeworks’ continued success under John’s leadership.”

Gualtieri will commence as managing director of Officeworks effective August 2025.

Scott said that Gualtieri is a retailer with proven capabilities and experience leading large teams and delivering strong commercial outcomes.

“John has been an outstanding leader at Kmart Group, helping drive the transformation of Kmart since he joined the business in 2008,” Scott said.

“John’s deep retail and commercial experience, coupled with his leadership skills, will take Officeworks into its next phase of growth. His appointment highlights the strength of Wesfarmers’ leadership and talent development processes.

“John joins Officeworks at an exciting time, with the business focused on strengthening its omnichannel customer experience, transforming its technology offer and scaling its business-to-business operations.”
